Turning in Your Uniform

I'm a total fan of the Mom Uniform. You know what I'm talking about here. It's those three or four items in your closet you know you can count on in a pinch, so you wear them all the time.  You can just reach in, grab 'em and be out of there in minutes. They look good, they look put together, and most importantly, they're probably clean. The only snag with this system is that it's pretty easy to get in a clothing rut without even realizing it. So today I'm going to give you 5 quick, no brainer ways to update your wardrobe. These ideas are painless and simple. And best of all? They're tailor made for *ahem* women of our age. This is a certified crop-top free zone, ladies.

Here's the first bit of wisdom I have for you. Invest in a pair of booties this year. They can turn a boring outfit into a cool one in just a snap. There are a ton of cute and comfortable options in the stores right now, so just get out there and try them on. Here's just one example- the Issax Bootie by Guess. It's a neutral, so it will go with everything you already have in your closet.  Score one for the mama!  Make sure you go for something with a lower heel and you'll be able to wear them all day without your dogs barking.

I am a total newbie at taking selfies, so please forgive the quality of the following pictures. I'm just trying to keep it real. If these ideas can work on this 48 year old Texas gal, they will definitely look great on you too.

A simple idea that can punch up your wardrobe is to wear a striped Tshirt instead of a plain Tshirt. No major planning needed here, just grab the striped one instead. Everything in these two images is the exact same with the exception of that shirt. See how it changes the whole feel of the outfit? It definitely moves it out of the boring category and into the trendy one with little effort. I am a firm believer in "little effort", so this speaks to me on a personal level.

Another easy fix is to stack bracelets on your wrist. Bracelets have consistently been near and dear to my heart for the way they always fit- even when I go on a queso bender. Again, try not to think too hard here. They should be complimentary, but not matchy-matchy. Odd numbers are always best, so 3 or 5 is what I'd aim for. No more than five, though. You don't want to be confused with Mr. T.

I know I'm going to make some enemies with this one, but I gotta speak the truth. It's time to ditch the blue denim jacket, girls. I know, I know. It has been your go-to BFF for years now. And that's why it's time to let it go. Look at these two pictures. Again, they are the exact same outfit except for that jacket. Left= boring and right= cute. Pick any solid neutral jacket to replace the denim one - army green, white, or khaki. Trust me, you're going to look precious.

Last but not least, switch out your belt. I like this leopard belt option. It has a lot of impact but doesn't look overdone. I also love that I didn't have to spend a fortune. Cute and cheap is always good in my book. ( Sidenote- Did you notice my great looking booties here? These are TOMS and they are so comfortable I can run a 5 minute mile in these babies. See what I mean about how the right shoes can make an outfit less "mom-ish"? They're like sneakers, but way cuter.)

So there you have it. Nothing earth shattering- just a few ideas to mix it up a bit. It's not like it's rocket science or anything. But you can call me doctor if you want to.
